Although Benin has a relatively small population, it bears a high malaria burden. The sale of antimalarials accounts for a substantial proportion of overall pharmaceutical sales. Few products are manufactured domestically, so most antimalarials are imported. The private sector in Benin is strong and represents an important source of antimalarials for consumers. However, in 2011, of all antimalarials sold through the private sector, ACTs comprised of 24.3%.

Since 2008, ACTwatch has conducted four outlet surveys (2008, 2009, 2011, and 2014), two household surveys (2009 and 2011), as well as qualitative and quantitative supply chain research (2009) in Benin. The results from the 2014 outlet survey is available here. A fifth outlet survey will be conducted in 2016.
