Although Benin has a relatively small population, it bore a high malaria burden during the ACTwatch project period. The sale of antimalarials accounted for a substantial proportion of overall pharmaceutical sales. Few products were manufactured domestically, so most antimalarials were imported. The private sector in Benin was strong and represented an important source of antimalarials for consumers.
ACTwatch conducted five outlet surveys (2008, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2016), two household surveys (2009 and 2011), as well as qualitative and quantitative supply chain research (2009) in Benin. Results from all surveys and research are available at the Results & publications page.
