ACTwatch Outlet Surveys 2013‐2014 ORS and Zinc Availability Findings from 9 Countries
Multi-country | Benin | Cambodia | DR Congo | Kenya | Madagascar | Nigeria | Tanzania | Uganda | Zambia | 2015ACTwatch antimalarial medicine outlet surveys were conducted in 2013 in the DRC (Kinshasa & Katanga provinces), Cambodia, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Uganda, and in 2014 in Benin, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. A representative sample of clusters was selected to provide national estimates (provincial estimates only in the DRC) as well as estimates in urban and rural areas in Benin, DRC, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Within selected clusters, a census of all outlets with the potential to sell or distribute antimalarials and/or provide malaria blood testing was completed. All enumerated outlets were administered a series of screening questions to assess eligibility of the ACTwatch outlet survey. Screened outlets were administered additional questions to assess availability of ORS and zinc. This document summarizes the findings from these ORS and zinc availability questions.

Antimalarial market complexity and diversity across 8 sub-Saharan African countries one decade after the introduction of artemisinincombination therapy
This poster was presented at the 9th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health, which took place between the 6-10th September 2015. Findings are presented for malaria medicine outlet surveys conducted between 2009-2014 in Benin, the DRC, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Trends are presented for key ACTwatch indicators, including availability of quality assured ACT, non-quality assured ACT, SP, market share of all anitmalarials and ACT price. The evidence points to challenges in quality assured ACT uptake, despite shifts in national malaria treatment guidelines. Of note is the recent emergence of numerous non-quality assured ACTs and availability and widespread use of SP for case management. Price of quality assured ACT continues to be a barrier despite implementation of large-scale subsidy schemes targeting the public and private sectors.
